Sarai Rohilla

Sarai Rohilla

Sarai Rohilla is one of the most iconic localities in North West Delhi, India. It is a blend of residential and commercial spaces, with older buildings side by side with newer structures. The name “Sarai” refers to an inn or rest house, a term commonly used in historical India for places of lodging, while “Rohilla” refers to a community of people believed to have migrated from the northwest regions of the Indian subcontinent, particularly from areas that are now in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The Rohilla community was historically involved in military and administrative roles, especially during the 18th century.

The locality of Sarai Rohilla has seen quite a bit of urban growth in the last few decades and is well connected with other parts of Delhi, specifically through the Delhi Metro, which is easily accessible from Sarai Rohilla Metro Station. Main roads along with proximity to important areas such as Karol Bagh, Patel Nagar, and Rajendra Place further add to it.

There are plenty of commercial activities going on within this area, and markets and other small local businesses are on the streets, with educational institutions, healthcare centers, and other essential services that can make the locality self-sufficient. It is where families and working professionals live.

From a historical aspect, it is believed to be one of the settlement areas from the Mughal period, though probably only an overnight stop for a traveling tradesman. However, now it is a much better known thriving urban atmosphere. This again showcases the vast growth that the city has undertaken in being the urban metropolis called Delhi. Still, with the even newer structures, it has this great historical culture behind Sarai Rohilla as well and is part of this wonderful urban tapestry of different cities such as Delhi.
