NREGA Chronicles: Empowering Rural India The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, that is now officially known as MGNREGA, proved to be a landmark reform in the rural Indian landscape right from 2005 when it was first enacted. There was a legal guarantee of at least 100 days of unskilled wage employment in a year for every rural household whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.
